After spending seven years at Oxford United, a rival team that was promoted to the Championship, former Reading youth James Henry was let go.

Henry, 34, grew up in Woodley and played for his hometown team, where he made 18 first-team appearances and scored four goals.

The midfielder, who struggled to break into a Premier League team, established himself in the EFL, most notably during stints at Millwall and Bolton.

After coming to Oxford in 2017, Henry played 260 games for the U.S. and scored twice in 18 games in 2023–2024.
Oxford gained promotion to the Championship this season for the first time in almost 25 years with a victory over Bolton at Wembley Stadium. Oxford was a part of several unsuccessful promotion campaigns at the Kassam Stadium.

Steve Seddon, Marcus Browne, and Billy Bodin have all been released, along with Henry.

Ed Waldron, Head of Recruitment, stated: “I would like to express my gratitude to every player that is leaving the team. I want to wish everyone of them the best of luck for the future since they have all contributed significantly throughout the years to our football team.
