The Real Reason LeBron James and Steph Curry Dislike Donald Trump: A Deeper Look

LeBron James and Steph Curry, two of the biggest stars in the NBA, have been vocal critics of former President Donald Trump throughout his political career. Their disdain for Trump is rooted in more than just political differences—it’s about principles, social justice, and the role of leadership.

Both LeBron and Curry have been outspoken advocates for social justice, using their platforms to raise awareness about issues like racial inequality, police brutality, and voter suppression. Trump’s rhetoric and policies, which they believe often stoked division and failed to address systemic racism, have directly clashed with their efforts to promote unity and equality. LeBron, in particular, has been deeply involved in initiatives like More Than a Vote, aimed at combating voter suppression in Black communities—efforts that were in direct opposition to some of Trump’s stances.

Another key reason for their disdain is Trump’s repeated attacks on athletes, especially those who kneel during the national anthem to protest racial injustice. Trump’s comments labeling athletes as “unpatriotic” for their peaceful protests struck a nerve with LeBron and Curry, both of whom have supported the right to protest and have themselves used their platforms to speak out against injustice. They viewed Trump’s remarks as an attempt to silence voices advocating for change and felt a responsibility to stand up against such rhetoric.

LeBron and Curry have both spoken about what they see as a lack of leadership and moral integrity from Trump. They have emphasized the importance of a president who unites rather than divides, who leads with empathy rather than animosity. LeBron, who has often referred to Trump as a divisive figure, made headlines in 2018 when he called Trump a “bum” on Twitter after the president rescinded an invitation to the White House for the Golden State Warriors, a team led by Curry.

Both athletes take seriously their roles as public figures and role models for the next generation. They believe that Trump’s behavior and messaging did not align with the values they want to impart to young people—values like respect, kindness, and the importance of using one’s influence for good. For LeBron and Curry, speaking out against Trump was also about setting an example of standing up for what they believe is right, even in the face of criticism.
