West Ham United’s summer signing, Niclas Füllkrug, has revealed his deep admiration for Nigerian Afrobeat superstar Burna Boy.
The German striker, who joined the Hammers from Borussia Dortmund after an impressive Bundesliga season where he netted 12 goals and provided 8 assists, won’t feature in West Ham’s Premier League clash against Fulham on Saturday due to a calf strain.
Füllkrug, due to the injury, also missed Germany’s 2-2 draw with the Netherlands on Tuesday in the UEFA Nations League.
In a recent video shared on X, Füllkrug opened up about his love for Afrobeat music, highlighting Burna Boy as his favorite artist.
He expressed a particular fondness for Burna Boy’s single “Last Last,” describing it as his top Afrobeat track. “My favourite music artist at the moment is Burna Boy. I like Afro beats a lot and Burna Boy. My favorite song and line is “Shayo”, Füllkrug shared.
The striker’s revelation underscored the growing global influence of Afrobeat music and Nigerian artists.
Nigerian artists have increasingly made their mark on major international stages, reflecting the genre’s growth globally.
In 2022, Davido, another prominent Nigerian artist, performed at the closing ceremony of the FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
Additionally, Rema made history as the first Nigerian artist to perform at the Ballon d’Or ceremony, delivering a memorable performance of his hit song “Calm Down” at the glamorous event won by Lionel Messi.
The prominence of Afrobeat continues to rise, with Burna Boy, alongside Rema and Tems, showcasing their genres at the NBA All-Star Game halftime show in 2023.
Burna Boy’s set included hits like “Plenty” and, notably, “Last Last,” the very track that Füllkrug highlighted as his favourite.
