Ex-49er thought the team’s contract offer was “disrespected”

This offseason, the San Francisco 49ers have had to make some tough contract decisions that have left at least one former player feeling a little taken advantage of.

Pass rusher Arik Armstead said he felt “very disrespected” by the 49ers’ offer to attempt to keep him in an edition of his podcast, “Third and Long.” Armstead claimed he was offended by the team’s initial offer but that he had no “animosity” towards the organisation. The 49ers reportedly made Armstead an offer of $6 million for a one-year contract with incentives worth up to $8 million.

“I did feel really disrespectful when they sent that over.” That amount of money, in my opinion, is not at all commensurate with the kind of player I am or the kind of dedication I have shown to the game, my team, the organisation, and my community.

“I did not think the offer came close to compensating a guy like me,” the player said.

As he had been earning $17 million a year, Armstead would have been accepting a pay cut of about $11 million in accepting the offer he outlined. In the end, he signed a three-year contract worth $43.5 million with the Jacksonville Jaguars, nearly twice the amount San Francisco had offered.

Players that are dissatisfied with the 49ers’ current handling of contract discussions are not alone, including Armstead. Armstead is a victim of these expenditures associated with assembling a competitive team and maintaining its core.

The 49ers had drafted 30-year-old Armstead in 2015, and he has since played for them. Over 12 games last season, he recorded five sacks.
