The 49ers general manager, John Lynch, gave two significant updates regarding the situation involving wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk during this week’s league meetings. Aiyuk is eligible for an extension and is now not available for trade while talks are still in progress for a lucrative new contract.
Aiyuk is bound by a $14.12MM contract through the fifth year option through 2024. After the 26-year-old had a career year in 2023 (75 catches, 1,342 yards, seven touchdowns), a new contract will come with a much higher tick rate. Christian McCaffrey, George Kittle, and Deebo Samuel already have lucrative contracts in place with San Francisco; adding Aiyuk to that list will probably be a laborious procedure.
Regarding that, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports that the team and the player are currently “not close” to finalising a deal. There is still plenty of time to work out an agreement.
Aiyuk’s situation has not reached the point where a trade request has surfaced, but the Arizona State product has recently shown signs of dissatisfaction on social media, and he has made it clear he is aiming for market value on his next deal. Lynch made the observation that animosity related to finances can dissipate once deals are struck. Samuel’s case is a prime example of that.
Aiyuk stated, “I feel like this season, this playing football season, I figured out who I was as a person and a player, what I bring to the table, what I bring to the locker room, what I bring to the organisation, and just the value I hold when I walk in that building. I am trying to get what I deserve,” according to Ian Caselberry of Yahoo Sports.
