Lions Predicted to Add ‘Highly Productive’ Edge Rusher After 16.5-Sack Season.

The Detroit Lions made significant strides in the 2023 season, reaching the NFC Championship Game for the first time in over three decades. However, one of their most glaring weaknesses was the lack of a consistent pass rush outside of Aidan Hutchinson. To address this issue, many analysts predict the Lions will target a “highly productive” edge rusher in the 2024 NFL Draft or free agency, particularly one coming off a dominant 16.5-sack season.

Lions’ Pass-Rushing Needs

Despite having one of the NFL’s most dynamic young defensive ends in Hutchinson, Detroit struggled to generate pressure from the opposite side. The Lions ranked near the bottom of the league in total sacks, often relying too heavily on their secondary to cover for the lack of disruption up front. While Hutchinson recorded 11.5 sacks, no other Lions player had more than 5.

Detroit’s defensive coordinator, Aaron Glenn, emphasized the need for a true game-changer on the opposite edge to complement Hutchinson. “We need more guys who can win one-on-one matchups,” Glenn said during a press conference after the season. “We’re looking for high-motor, productive guys who can finish plays.”

Potential Target: Jared Verse or Laiatu Latu?

One of the top edge rushers projected to be available in the draft is Florida State’s Jared Verse. The 6-foot-4, 260-pound defensive end posted 16.5 sacks over the past two seasons and is known for his relentless motor and ability to pressure quarterbacks consistently. Verse’s explosiveness off the edge would give Detroit a dangerous pass-rushing duo with Hutchinson.

Another name to watch is UCLA’s Laiatu Latu, who also recorded 16.5 sacks in 2023. Latu has been one of the most technically refined pass rushers in college football, displaying an elite combination of speed, power, and hand usage. His ability to disrupt plays in the backfield could make him an ideal fit for Detroit’s aggressive defensive scheme.

Free Agent Options

If the Lions choose to bolster their pass rush through free agency instead of the draft, there are several intriguing options available. Josh Allen of the Jacksonville Jaguars is coming off a career-best 17.5-sack season and could be a prime target if he reaches the open market. Another potential option is Bryce Huff, a rising star for the New York Jets who recorded 10 sacks in 2023 despite playing limited snaps.

A Crucial Offseason Decision

With the Lions on the verge of Super Bowl contention, upgrading their pass rush could be the final piece of the puzzle. Whether through the draft or free agency, expect Detroit to make a major move to add a “highly productive” edge rusher who can complement Hutchinson and elevate the defense to the next level.

The 2024 offseason will be a defining moment for the Lions, and all signs point to them addressing their most pressing need with a dominant pass rusher
