The Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) has issued a statement condemning the hostile reception faced by Max Verstappen and Red Bull Racing’s team principal, Christian Horner, during Formula 1’s season-launch event in London. The event, held at the O2 Arena, was intended to celebrate the sport’s 75th anniversary and featured all ten teams unveiling their 2025 season liveries. However, the occasion was marred by sections of the 15,000-strong audience booing Verstappen and Horner upon their appearances. In response to the incident, an FIA spokesperson expressed disappointment, stating: “Great rivalries throughout the history of motorsport have contributed to making it such an exciting experience for fans. But what underpins sport at all levels is a culture of respect.” The spokesperson emphasized that both Verstappen and Horner have significantly contributed to Formula 1 and urged the community to reflect on the impact of their actions, both online and offline. The negative reaction from the predominantly British crowd is believed to stem from lingering tensions following the controversial conclusion of the 2021 championship, where Verstappen clinched the title over British driver Lewis Hamilton. Additionally, Horner has been a polarizing figure, partly due to his portrayal in the Netflix series “Drive to Survive” and recent allegations of inappropriate behavior, from which he was cleared after an internal investigation. The incident has prompted discussions about the location of future season-launch events. Jos Verstappen, Max’s father, condemned the crowd’s behavior, describing it as “shameful,” and indicated that his son is reluctant to participate in similar events in England again. Max Verstappen himself has threatened to boycott future events if they continue to be held in the UK. Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff also weighed in, defending the event’s organization and dismissing claims of his involvement in the booing. He noted that the crowd’s reaction was independent of any actions from team officials and emphasized the importance of maintaining a respectful atmosphere in the sport. The FIA’s statement further highlighted their commitment to combating abuse in sports through initiatives like the “United Against Online Abuse” campaign.
