Martina Navratilova Shares Bold Take on Emma Raducanu’s US Open Chances: “She Can Go Deep”

With the 2025 US Open fast approaching, tennis legend Martina Navratilova has shared her thoughts on Emma Raducanu’s potential at this year’s final Grand Slam. Speaking to Sky Sports, the 18-time major champion believes Raducanu could make a deep run in New York—if the draw works in her favor.

“Emma has a chance of going deep if she gets a good draw,” said Navratilova, adding intrigue to a tournament that already carries significant weight for Britain’s No. 1.

Returning to the Scene of History

The US Open holds a special place in Raducanu’s career. It was there, in 2021, that she stunned the tennis world by winning her maiden Grand Slam title—becoming the first qualifier in history to lift a major. She defeated Canada’s Leylah Fernandez in the final, 6-4, 6-3, without dropping a single set across the tournament.

However, the years since have been turbulent. Between injuries, coaching changes, and inconsistent form, Raducanu has struggled to recapture that magic. She’s made two US Open main draw appearances since her win, suffering first-round exits on both occasions.

Signs of a Comeback?

Despite the setbacks, 2025 has seen promising signs of resurgence. Raducanu has played 41 matches so far this season, winning 24 and losing 17—an encouraging step forward for the 21-year-old.

Her standout showing came at the DC Open, where she reached the semifinals before falling to Anna Kalinskaya in straight sets. She also recently pushed world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka to the limit in a thrilling third-round clash at the Cincinnati Open. Despite losing 7-6, 6-4, 7-6 in a match that lasted over three hours, Raducanu came away proud of her performance.

“She’s world No. 1 for a reason,” Raducanu said post-match. “I pushed her more than I did at Wimbledon, so that’s an improvement.”

Their battle in Cincinnati followed a previous meeting at Wimbledon, where Raducanu shocked Sabalenka in straight sets. But facing her again on a hard court—and competing toe-to-toe—was an important milestone.

“To have pushed her on a hard court like that, I’m pretty proud,” she added. “I think starting the point is a big takeaway.”

Learning and Looking Ahead

Raducanu also acknowledged the difference in “big moments,” giving credit to Sabalenka’s ability to raise her level under pressure:

“She did that incredibly well in the big moments. She served and returned really well. I did too, in certain moments, but to hold that level throughout—that’s a big thing for me to work on.”

As the US Open approaches, expectations around Raducanu remain high—but grounded. With improved form, greater match fitness, and confidence against top players, a deep run may not be far-fetched—especially if the draw breaks her way.

And with legends like Navratilova backing her, the tennis world will be watching closely.
