SUCCESS FOR DAVID CAUSIER IN VIENNA

At the BLZ National Training Academy in Vienna, David Causier defeated Dhruv Sitwala 719–246 to win the 2024 Austrian Open championship, extending his stellar start to the year.

After winning the Scottish Open in Kirkcaldy back in January, Causier is now the 2024 World Billiards ranking event champion. This success comes from his performance in the fifth edition of the Austrian Open.

The 50-year-old Englishman dominated the first round of play, which saw 35 cueists from eight different countries split into groups. He won four matches, including a memorable one-hour match against Fraser Durham of Canada, with a remarkable aggregate points score of 3,145-226.

In the last 16, Causier easily defeated Chris Taylor with four breaks above 100. A more tightly contested quarter-final match against Jonathan Marwood was ultimately won by a score of 613–351.

A tremendous run of 706 points in the final four allowed the multiple world champion to secure his spot in the championship match against fellow countryman Darren Clark, prevailing by a margin of more than 1,000 points.

He would meet Sitwala, the previous World Championship runner-up, there.

The Indian had swept his group with victories in a row, then easily defeated Ian Whiting and Kenny Campbell to get to the semi-finals, where he would take on Christian Kirk of Northern Ireland.

The Indian player easily defeated Causier by 500 points thanks to breaks of 247 and 151. However, Sitwala was unable to stop the Englishman in the title match, as the Englishman easily won 719-246 to claim his second-ranking title of the year.
